Hi,
I'm new to Linux... a Windoze convert exploring the alternatives.
I'm trying to install SuSE v8.0 on an Intel PC via FTP
I got the Boot disk to work, but I cannot seem to get connectivity to the FTP site.
My technical deets...
1. I am using a 3COM 3C509B... the program asks for parameters.. I don't know what it is looking for... I just left it blank
2. I am behind a Linksys NAT router.
3. Network card auto detect finds some other adapter.. then does not work... I removed the bad adapter... and installed my adapter... I get the positive feedback... but suspect this is a problem(since DHCP does does not work)
I enter what I think are all the correct answers and get squat..
My Answers...
Gateway ... standard LinkSys gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS.. my ISP DNS
DHCP ... i tried it with DHCP(no response) and static 192.168.1.8
FTP address. BTW the doc says i can enter the URL but it complains when i enter text...
Help please...

Probably better folks than I to answer, but looks like nobody is doing it, so I'll give it a shot and maybe somebody smarter will shoot me down -- but at least you'll have an answer!!
Depending on your knowledge of Linux, you may want to start over. I think DHCP will be the best way for you to set the adapter up, but your config files probably already have the private (192.168) address in them. If you know how to find them and if you have an editor available at this stage (pico, vi, ?) you could remove the references to the private net.
You will find that SuSE configuration scripts are VERY WELL commented. But, I don't know what you have to work with.
So, if you can't change the configuration, just wipe it and start over.
Do you have two network adapters in the computer??
If so, you should grab a DOS boot and config utility and configure the NICs ONE-AT-A-TIME!!!
The 3c509 will be easy for SuSE to find. I don't think you'll even have to fiddle, but . . .
Make sure your BIOS is set to Plug-n-Play NOT -- and make sure you know the IRQ and I/O of the 3Com NIC. You can get from 3Com/USRobotics the configuration utility, but it is a DOS program and you can set the IRQ to 5 which ought to not interfere with anything.
Give that a try and see what you get.

Cadillac84... You really don't need to send a email to the LNO administrators to delete the post made in error as they just forward your request on to us moderators.
You do have the ability to delete the second post yourself.
Click on 'Edit' on the 2nd thread, select ?? 'Delete' and the Edit Post. Something like that.

If you look at this page, it may help. For a start, it seems you need to add the IP address of the mirror site, not your router's ip address.
Hope it helps -

can I say oops... you bet,...
Ok, I thought it was a wild guess on your part...I was soooo sure I had only the one NIC in the machine... so I started down the patch of configuring the "one" NIC via DOS and in Windows... but lo and behold even Windows says there is a second card in the machine... long story short... yup... you were on the money... THANKS.
but now...
I'm getting... something about setting up some swap space.. eg: /dev/sda2 ...
OK... more back ground... I know next to nothing about Linux or Unix... or even /dev/whatever... I know they are devices.. but that's it...
So, how do I set up a swap partition...

Did you ever get this resolved? I'm having a similar problem with a laptop and pcmcia card and it's P@#$#$ me off.
Thoughts??

Actually... Yes, I did get it resolved. I found some additional documentation (that was not in the original text I read) that says to install via FTP you need at least (not exactly sure here but...) 96Mb of RAM.
I bought some RAM to bump my system up to 128Mb and just last night I got the install to run.
If your problem is with SuSE recognizing the PC Card... I would try an older one (if you have one... ) from the list on the BOOT.ISO disc.
Hope that helps. Sorry... I'm real new at Linux and know next to nothing about the technical side of it.
