Hi everyone...
Sorry for mentioning this, I'm sure it's probably mentioned elsewhere, but I have reasons for reposting this here...
As some of you have already read my (miserable) suffering of Linux 7.1 on my desktop I've recently suffered a revelation and scrapped it. Totally and now set up RedHat Linux 6.2 on my laptop to run as a server. It's a Dell Latitude LM with a P133 MMX processor with (only!) 24mb RAM but it's working perfectly as a DHCP server and the ilk. The problem is with Kernel recompilation. Since I'm new to Linux, I don't REALLY know what I'm doing, but thanks to the help files and HOWTOs I'm getting along. Unfortunately I need the answers to a couple of questions (and there's a bonus at the end for anyone who wants it...)
1) Is it normal to compile a Kernel (v2.2.14) on a P133 in 10-20 mins?
2) Why do I get numerous "Unresolved Symbols" errors after compiling the Kernel?
3) Why doesn't my Psion Dacom PCMCIA modem startup (whereas it did on the previous installation) anymore?
4) Since I get the unresolved symbols, I can't initialise the Sound Card (ESS AudioDrive 1688) whereas I can with the stock Kernel. How can I get around this and why aren't the modules compiled properly? What are "Unresolved Symbols"? Hell, what are "Symbols" in the first place?
And now the bonus...
After reinstallation, I have kept an EXACT diary of every command (in concise form) that I've issued the Linux system to configure the system as it is now. I can go into lengthy texty descriptions of the hardware, but I'd rather not. If anyone wants this information (right down to each individual Kernel compilation option) then I'll be happy to provide it for eduactional purposes and to help anyone else who wants to install a similar system. It is so stupidly concise you wouldn't believe it, but when Linux wants to do something serious, it can take some time so I had plenty to type it all out. It's in an unformatted text file...
E-mail me at RJAHowells@Hotmail.com if you want a copy of it...
Please help with the unresolved symbols - I am running RedHat 6.2 with Kernel version 2.2.14 and hope someone can help me!
Many thanks in advance
James
