I have that MBR prompt thing the Debian 2.2 installer installs on the MBR where I have to press shift when i see it, then A, then 2. Then, I get a lilo prompt for a VERY short time, I can boot other kernels by pressing shift here and entering their name too. If I don't press shift at the MBR prompt it boots straight into windows. What I want to know is, is there a way to remove the MBR prompt thing and the LILO under it and replace it with one LILO loader so I can enter windows or linux at the prompt without having to do all that Shift, A then 2 stuff? Would it simply be a case of downloading and installing the latest LILO? Would that copy over the existing stuff in the MBR?
Thanks

Try making a boot disk. I got sick of LILO because I was installing some **** in Winblows and had to reboot like 15 000 000 times. I just put in my Linux boot disk when I want to go into Linux, otherwise, I boot into the other one.

I'm not sure how to make a boot disk other than during the install (shame on me).

I also have no idea how to remove the LILO thinggy without a re-install either. You can re-install winblows to erase the MBR.

Someone else should tag in now!

Thats not really what I meant... Hmm, I'd go download and install the latest LILO now but i dont want to mess up my MBR because linux is working so well atm. Will it work if I do do that though?

Yeah, I have debian potato 2.2. and I have had problems with booting. I konw that if you have another drive. (2. one for your linux, one for your windoze) you have to have the Windoze drive as numero uno. and then linux. That MBR thing i've seen recently after i got a new drive. I installed linux on my h/d and found that i get that MBR message and then LILO. I think its because my h/d is above the possible limit for my BIOS. That could be the reason you get the MBR message.... just some thoughts.

I have never pressed shift. I always pressed tab and that brings up my options. Usually my current kernel, the previous one just in case of a mishap and then my win. I'll hit tab, then it gives me my choice and a lilo prompt again. I am not sure what hitting shift will do, I have never tried it. I dont think you need the latest version of lilo, but it wont hurt. Besides, if you have been apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, you should have the latest (depending on whether or not your sources.list is for stable or unstable). Either way, lilo will be enough up to date. Of course YMMV.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

I dont actually have any problems with it giving me a MBR prompt then a lilo prompt, everything works fine, I just want to replace the MBR promp with a LILO prompt.
