I can`t install Linux! Please HELP!!!

I have tryed about 6 different Linux versions!!!
and my machine just doesn`t accept it!!!
All Linux that I tryed to install appears the following error message:

Code: XXX XXX XXX
Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: attempted to kill the idle task!
In swapper task - not syncing

My machine is just great with windows, a AMD K6-2 350, ALI ALADDIN V chip set, ATI Rage Pro, 64MB, SCSI controller, Toshiba CD-ROM etc...
My friend`s identical machinem except for a AMD 400 and Soyo motherboard, installs and run Linux very well.
Please, somebody have any clue???

Do you have a good reference Book?
Linux Complete by Sybex (ISBN 0-7821-2567-0)is very good.

You may want to check with http://MetaLab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html to see if there's a problem with your hardware.

is this with the boot image or is it after you have installed the packages?
