i noticed storm boasts some package manager. is this some front-end for apt-get/dpkgwhatever, or is it something really crappy like drake's rpm managers. and do i hafta use it, or can i just use apt/dpkg?

Storm has a graphical front end for apt. You don't NEED it. Just open a terminal window and apt-get all night long.

I used storm for a bit and never got used to the graphical apt. Some people like it though. Try it both ways and decide for yourself.

Let me explain how the various Debian package management tools.

dpkg is the package management software itself. It installs and removes packages.

apt is BOTH a front-end to dselect AND a package acquisition tool.

dselect is a front-end to BOTH apt and dpkg.

The Storm package manager is, like Dselect, a front-end to apt (which is a front-end to dpkg) and directly to dpkg. So are other programs like Aptitude.

While I used Storm, I never used stormpkg (front end to apt). I never liked it much. Just use apt-get or dpkg directly.

dselect is fugly. i'm gonna try playing with apt or just dpkg this weekend.

i may reinstall, i think i've hosed it a bit, and i wanna see if i can install it (plain old debian) without adding ANY packages other than what's necessary, and then just kinda do it one at a time as i need it.

i installed storm first, it seemed nice and all, but i don't need a pretty boot loader, or a pretty boot screen. it did give me the choice to NOT boot straight into X, i'll give them that. but straight debian will be just fine for this box. if a pay version exists (like slackware's store distrio), i'll prolly buy it just for the principle of support, and to get whatever manuals/other cool stuff comes with it.

I have used storm's package manager but it's more confusing than dselect. Okay, no quite, but I prefer simply using apt and/or aptitude. Now that is a nice little program!

What's the latest with Storm anyway?
I have been trying to reach their support dept for 2 weeks with no luck. I finally managed to get someone on the phone who told me to email my questions to her personally. I did. She never replied to the email.
Are they completely out of business or what?

well, they filed for bankruptcy (I guess about a month ago). I haven't checked their site in a while so that's all the info. I got.
