ok...installed mandrake 7.2 on my machine...thanks to everyone for their sugestions....i got some problems now though.
I have 2 cd-roms. 1 regular and one burner, both ide, regular is /dev/cdrom and burner is /dev/cdrom2. i can access the cdroms, but I can't get anywhere in the way of burning. I tried to open X_Cd-Roast, at which point it told me something about not haing scsi emulation and to check the cd-writng howto. I went into the cd-writing howto and put all the lines in my lilo.conf and modules.conf as described in the howto. cdrecord -scanbus returns with a message that it cannot open the scsi driver. do i need to do anything with my kernel? if so, what is it? i tried reading the kernel howto but got totally lost. did i miss something? do i need some sort of driver like i did in windows? i still cannot burn anything and am getting very frustrated.
also, is there any scanner software out there that anyone would suggest?
thanks for any help

When your configureing your kernel, turn off IDE/APATI CDROM in the block device section i think. Then in the scsi section turn on SCSI CDROM support and SCSI GENERIC support, you can turn the other options like verbose off safely. Finally, remove those lines in your lilo.conf so it was just like before. When your new kernel boots it will spit out a message saying it found two scsi generics (if youve got two cd drives) and that there placed on sr0,sr1 or sg0, sg1. There ya go, that cdrecord -scanbus should come up with your drives now.

7, i appreciate your help, but it went over my head...how do i configure my kernel? do i have the kernel source? did it come with my mandrake 7.2 complete install?
sorry for such basic questions, but i've never had to deal with a kernel before.
thanks,

Installing a kernel can get a bit indepth, so i should point you to the nhfs (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernelcomp.html) on the subject. You can tell if your kernel source is on your system, because it will be in /usr/src, there should be a directory called linux. If not you can download the 2.2.18 kernel here (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.18.tar.bz2), or the spanking new 2.4.0 here. (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/linux-2.4.0.tar.bz2) I give you two because the nhf deals with 2.2.x kernels but the 2.4 shouldent be much different. Just post if you need any help.

i just found the x-cd-roast nhf and when it says to type make xconfig, i get an error, saying that there is no rule to make xconfig...i guess that i do not have the source...is there anyway i can install it from my mandrake cd's?..i can't get online with that machine...

Sure. The kernel source should be on the cd. You will have to hunt it down and install the package. What does Mandrake use? .rpm?

Stavefan, I thought you ran Red Hat 6.1?
Seriously though, you might want to check www.linuxdocs.org (http://www.linuxdocs.org) for a cd burner how-to. They are probably a bit technical, but, they are usually good.
There is probably another program that will allow you to burn CD's just as well as the program that you are trying to use, just in case your problem is in the program.
Also, most older kernels (2.2.18 for example) are available form www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org) for full download, if you need the source for it.
Sorry, I have never used a burner in Linux before, and, I had a big thing written out before my brother closed my window.
Anyway, just wanted to help where I could.

Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to get the kernel-source off the mandrake cd and resolve the dependencies that it had. I followed the directions from the the X-CD-Roast NHF and the CD-Writing howto, and it seems to work....I tried to use an 80-min cd, but i think that the hardware only supports a 74 min cd (it was the only one i had in the appartment)...it gave me errors about timing out, so I am going to try to pick up a 74 min cd soon and see if it will let me burn.
thanks for the help
james bond - i will email you as soon as i can. i hope everything is going well at ursinus!
