I have one Redhat 7.3 machine and one XP machine.
Finally set up the machine account and usernames and passwords, for the users on the xp machine to be the same user/pass on the samba machine....

when I go to login it gives me "The trust relationship between this workstaiton and the primary domain failed." i have no clue what I have to do to change that... my guess would be a user privilages need to be changed.... but im basically clueless..

Has your XP machine joined the domain successfully? Sometimes that can be a tricky process. Also, there is a registry hack you have to make to get your XP machine to participate in the Samba domain successfully.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon
\parameters
That should be all one line but I couldn't get it to come out right in this edit box.
In that key, you need to create this parameter(don't know if that's the right MS terminology or not)
"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000

It'd help if you posted your /etc/samba/smb.conf file here.

Also, I assume you are using XP Professional?

what do the windows hacks do and why are they needed?

I went back through, figured out that the [profiles] / [netlogon] things had been commented out, I got the content, but not the [blah] things uncommented... did that...restarted samba and now it says "the system cannot log you on now because the domain WORLDOFLINUX is not available."

Alright... now it logs in, but it makes windows restart, so maybe I have something wrong with the profiles thing. becuase it cant find a profile windows bails and restarts? Im so confused =(

Alright, im in, it seemed to work what I did to make it work was comment out the profiles and in global, the whole "storing roving proviles" but id like to use it if I can. If anyone can help me make profiles work and store on the linux box, that would be great... Im trying to make linux replace novell, and I need it working to try and convence the company =D Im trying to make everything I can work in connection between Samba and Windows... we run windows 2000 mostly here, but im using my laptop to demo it. ...

Off the top of my head....

Is this machine a member of the domain or the PDC??

security = domain

is for a machine that is not a PDC but a member of a domain.

If this machine is acting as a PDC then you'll want

security = user

Hope this helps....

what does PDC stand for?

Primary Domain Controller, the thing that makes a windows domain.....

elfking

Yeah, i want it to be the primary domain controller, my machine logs in now, but id like it to store the profiles for everyone as in the stuff that I commented out. not entirely sure what its used for but im trying to learn, =D

You should have the howto in:

/usr/share/doc/samba-version/docs/htmldocs/Samba-PDC-HOWTO.html

All the info you need is in there... along with a sample smb.conf file with examples, links and more helpful info.

Read through some of the other threads in this forum that are active right now. There's one that gives detailed instructions on setting up your Samba server as a PDC. There's also one that solves the problems of Windows rebooting when accessing Samba.
