After installing mandrake, telnet doesent want to work, neither telnetting to localhost, OR telnetting from another machine. I'm at a loss here.

The inetd.conf says the telnet function is enabled, and I checked the hosts.deny and allow files to no avail.

Thanks a alot

Here is something I found out by having the same problems you are. You need to put your disk back in and pull up the rpm. Find the Telnet server rpm and install that. Linux only installs the client by default unless you specify the server by selecting it as a package during install.

Yes, check and see if telnet is installed. You also might want to look at some logs (/var/log/messages /var/log/syslog) for in.telnetd errors. If the file doesn't exist it should tell you in there..

If you chose the manimum security option when you install, good luck, and forget about it. It closes all of those functions off. I just had the same thing happen myself. I had to do a reinstall, and choose low or medium security. To start with, you will notice in your /etc/rc.d/rc3.d folder that there is no link for xinetd. It doesn't call it at all, so you need to create a link for it from the /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd file.

You will have a lot of problems if you continue to use the maximum sec kernel. Just do a quick reinstall, it will upgrade and you will not lose any of your settings.
