Help me boys (and girls)! My computer will autorun the cd when I load it, Linux (RedHat 7.0) will open it's player and play the cd. But I get no sound whatsoever, not from the computer speakers or from the auxiliary (my stereo) speakers. I know the speakers/sound card work(ed) with win95/98, and I highly doubt that my installation of Linux destroyed these. HELP ME PLEASE! I neeeeed music, being a poor, unemployed, bored college student! (BTW, the reason I want to play cds thru the comp, is b/c the stereo's lens is so sensitive that it picks up on the slightest scratch or crumb. )
Thanx everyone!

Lots of variables here. Do you know what type of sound card you have? Does your system let you play any other sounds e.g. system sounds or mp3s? Are you running as root or a normal user? If a normal user, have you ever tried to play sounds/play a cd as root? Please try to fill in the blanks and well try to get you running. And how dare you get crumbs on your CDs!! ;)

I just went thru this on my laptop running MDK 7.0. I poked around at mandrakeexperts.com and got the following reply.
"Can You Run SNDCONFIG?"
Four very lovely sounding workds for my newbie ears.
It found my sound card and now I'm Supa Dupa happy! I'm assuming since MDK is, for the most part, based on RH, it should work the same. Run it as root and see if it can recognize your sound card. If not, you may have to see if there's a module or driver out there.

Dude--
Try the easy thing first:
In KDE go into multimedia>kmixer
and make sure the volumes are set
right-- the two you want to check
are the one all the way to the left
and the one with the CD Icon.

Thanks everyone ... I'll be trying all the suggestions tonight to see if something works. But here's another little question: has anyone else had trouble with the size of the windows that pop up? Mine are bigger than the screen and I can't seem to fix it. My guess is that I put in the wrong screen size during my installation -- sound right?

There is a wire running from the cdrom to the motherboard that carries sound.. have you checked to see if it was loose or even there?

As I've stated, JimBeam, everything worked fine before my installation of redhat. The computer I'm running RH off of is a laptop, and I'm not a technical genius, so opening up the comp to see if the wire is in tact is not a specialty of mine. But thanx for the idea.

Always a good idea to include more details when posting a question. We wouldn't have known you were talking about a laptop.
It usually pays off as you are most likely to get a solution to your problem a little quicker.
Just my opinion though and usually doesn't mean very much.
Did you check the volume settings in the mixer and also checked the sound modules have been loaded?
Did you make sure that the CD wasn't mounted?

make sure, that you have connected your CDR ROM drive and your SOUND card with that special cable. otherwise you wont hear anything when you try to play audio cds. although, mp3 files work.
