Well ,

if somebody remembers, I had problems with my linux freezing , before I thought it was video card, but now I think it's CPU ;( ... here it is :
today I got new TB 1.4Ghz , b/c I have Abit KT7, which doesn't have 14x multiplier, so I had to do this 12x113mhz ... well , works good ... but it froze again ;( ... so, now I know for sure that it's cpu's problem :( ... how would I go about fixing this ... thx a lot :)

the >1.2 Tbirds all use the 133Mhz frontside bus, you want to use 10.5@133

with those settings it won't even post ;(

actally I just flashed my bios ... gonna try that again

Have you tried flashing the latest bios update? Version 1.3 if I remember correctly has the bin code to support the higher processors.

I did mine last night on my Abit-KT7A and I've only just started to configure it since I purchased the board a few months ago. One of the first things I always do with a new motherboard.

yeah, I flashed it , it has an option (without using User Config) - 1200 and above ... I tried it and it gives me only 1300 :(

and I think KT7A supports such cpus fine, and KT7 not :( ... the problem is that KT7 supports only 200 Mhz bus and the cpu is 266 mhz

Sorry as I don't really know what else to suggest unless you keep trying different settings.

I have the T-Bird 1.13 which likely work on your KT7, so why don't we just trade the 1.13 for the 1.4? ;)

well , thx for help anyway ... going to be experementing more I guess ...

well , I'll need to upgrade my MB soon anyway : ) ... but it will be in like 3-4 months :( (need to get some money first ;( ) .... so until that I want to be on 1.4 ;)

Parcel Post ? UPS? You send first. ;) ;)

Have you tried some of the cpu/motherboard specific sites out there? One is ??? viahardware.com and another cluboverclockers.com

A good search should be able to find some technical help on this.

FedEx will be much better ;)

I tried anandtech , but didn't know those sites , will try them : ) thx ;)

Do you have another os on your system (Windows?) you could boot to and see if it still freezes?

Are you sure it's nothing in Linux that is causing the problem?

At least boot with a bootdisk and leave it for awhile and see if it still locks up.

Come to think of it, my 1.13 has the 266fsb also.

mdwatts : actually win2k freezes also :( ... it only happens when I try to increase my FSB :( ... so , now I'm running at 1300 with FSB=100 and my linux didn't freeze for the whole night :)

but I want to run at 1400 :)

Have you tried those 2 sites I posted as they may have other suggestions to increase the speed without using the fsb?

I tried those sites ... and everything that I found only had FSB in them : ( ... only KT7A can support 1.4 without increasing FSB :(

just wondering what kind of temperature your processor maintains? perhaps it's getting a little too warm? (am i right in thinking that mobo has monitoring hardware on it, btw?)

yes, it has , but I couldn't get it working in linux ;( ...

but in win2k it's about 40-50C ... so, I think it's pretty good ...

but it's when cpu is doing almost nothing (forgot how that stage called :( need to learn english ;) ) ... but win2k froze when cpu was doing almost nothing also ... but still maybe u r right, maybe it's b/c of overheating ... gotta replace my GlobalWin ... but with that college don't have any money to give to my computer ;(

Well here's a little test that will tell you if there is a problem with your CPU, or if the problem is with the FSB.

Run the cpu at 133*9 = ~1200mhz, and see if the cpu works at that speed
then run the cpu at 100*12 = 1200mhz

if they both work then i dunno, it's probably a problem with running your cpu at 1.4. If the first setting fails then your memory or some component doesn't work at higher bus speeds

Giscardo :

133x9 doesn't work , and 100x12 works perfectly ...
