I just installed Mandrake 8.2.

I had a relatively painless installation, save for the fact that I can't get a printer set up. When I try to autodetect a printer, none is found. When I try to manually add a printer (I tried using every available LPT given to me) there's no printer found.

It seems like it doesn't even know there's an LPT port on the computer.

Can anyone help me? I had an HP LaserJet 6L.

Thanks.

Funny thing, I had a somewhat similar problem with Mandrake 8.2 and a much older HP printer, HPLJ2P, last week. First, I had to do a manual install. Second, it took me a while to figure out that there is a difference of one between M$ lptn: and Linux lpm (no t) m = n-1, i.e. lpt1 = lp0. Third, I had to use expert mode, despite my lack of expertise, because the default CUPS printer service did not work for me. I had to switch to LPRng. I'm still not very happy with the result.

Finally (it should have been, first) try http://www.linuxprinting.org/ . They have a wealth of knowledge if you can understand it.

Note added in proof::) Mandrake Expert STILL hasn't answered my question of last Saturday about installing my printer.
