how much difference does having ddr ram on your graphics card make compared to not having it?

at the minute i've got a ddr 64mb geforce 2 mx 400 i'm looking at upgrading though to:

either, Siluro GeForce 3 Ti200 128MB AGP RP DVI VO (no ddr)

or

Siluro GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB DDR AGP RP costs another £30 ($45)

i'd prefer to get the cheaper one, but will the ddr make much difference compared to having twice the RAM on the other?

Having more RAM generally does NOT speed things up.

Unless, of course, your framebuffer and all textures won't fit into 64MB of memory (so you have to go to system memory via AGP), but I've NEVER seen that yet (with 64MB cards -- when they were 8MB and 16MB, it was a different story).

You will see a difference, though, between GF3 and GF4 cores. The 4 would run a bit faster even on SDR memory, plus it has dualhead support (maybe important, maybe not). I think the memory bus is faster also (which means the memory actually runs at more than 2x the speed of the GF3).

I think for $45, it's worth it, but that's just me.

probably look for a 64meg geforce 3 ti then depending on the price diference between that and a 64meg geforce 4 ti
