My dialup provider is calling it quits and I am shoping for DSL ISP service that must be compatible with Linux - no proprietary Winblows/Mac only crap.

So, if you are living in Southern California and you currently use DSL with Linux please let me know your provider.

Please don't bother posting links unless you actually use the service with Linux or you personally know someone who does -for sure.

Thanks

Okay, I don't live in Southern California, but I'm fairly certain that they operate there as well. My ISP is Speakeasy (http://www.speakeasy.net). I am currently using it with linux. Well not at this exact moment because I'm at work, but I do when I'm at home. I have had one outage, but it was resolved fairly quickly and the tech support guy was pretty good. You might also want to check out Telocity. I hear they're pretty good.

As far as I know, you can use @home with Linux, as a few people up here where I live are using it with Linux (I know you asked about xDSL and I am talking about cable).

I dont live in Cali. but from i read around, i dont know of any DSL providers that give much support for linux, but however i am pretty sure that most will not know the diffrence. As far as i can tell it will take some configuring on your part. Ex...i use bellsouth for DSL and they do not support linux, but they do not care if i use it to connect, they're only concern was that they would not give me support for it

The only one of hand I know of is Speakeasy. Have you looked at www.dslreports.com? (http://www.dslreports.com?) There may be others but I am not sure. Are you looking for support from the ISP for linux or just for an ISP that doesn't use any software?

<addition>

Telocity does support linux, I guess that means if you call them with a tech support type question they can help.

I live in north cali and have pacbell DSl, and it works fine in linux. Most DSL providers use standards complience, but use icky windows software to connect, so most will work with linux, just dont try and get support from them if it doesn't.

You should be able to use any DSL service with Linux. As far as I know, all the protocols they use are the same and there's no way for them to tell what you're running at your end. The only problem you might run into is if they provide you with a USB "modem" or some piece of junk like that that you can't use under Linux, in which case you'd need to pick up a compatible "modem" elsewhere.

I live in Southern Cali....and I have both xDSL and Cable and they both work with Linux and any other OS...(Flashcom - DSL and Time Warner - Cable)...but I know that you need any special software to use them.... I run a Linux router/firewall on both lines. All you really need is an IP,Gateway, and DNS for xDSL and set DHCP on Cable....THAT'S IT!

OOPs....I ment you don't need any special software to use xDSL or Cable..

Thanks to all who replied. I was not looking for support from the ISP, just a dependable service that does not require any special software.

special thanks to fobzz and Gaccm

Most DSL ISp's will use PPPoE. As long as you have a working client it should work fine. Just make sure you get a DSL "modem" that connects to ethernet.

Doh! I was so dumb... I needed look no further than my other dialup ISP -now www.dslextreme.com (http://www.dslextreme.com) formerly www.rampageusa.com (http://www.rampageusa.com)

The have everything I am looking for and I'm already using their dialup. Static IP address and none of this PPPoE junk.
