Where is there a decent idiots guide to samba?
It is installed on my machine, but I cant seem to get any of the programs to run.

The NHF got me started. Mandrake comes with a GUI (SWAT) and an O'Reily book which allowed me to setup samba to act as a domain controller.

sh makerpms.sh

All seems to be going well, various file names flash past, until finally it buggers up.

Is reinstalling your whole distro not an alternative? If you can reinstall, be sure to select smb as one of the packages.

Would that mean reformatting and starting from scratch? Or is there a 'reinstall' option?

What the hek distribution are you using?
I had the best luck by downloading a non-RPM version from samba.org, un-tarring it, doing a ./configure, make, make install, and following the few simple directions to get it going.
Only thing I haven't quite figured out is how to get it to auto-start under Solaris http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
The NHF looks like it goes over most of it (except how to use the default mode of encrypted passwords for NT clients) - but I used the O'reilly book Running Samba to get it going, which you can download from www.ora.com. (http://www.ora.com.)
