Is AMD Athlon Tbird an i686? What else is?

Yes, it is i686-compatible.

You can use programs compiled for 686 on Pentium Pro's, 2's, 3's, and 4's, and on most AMD's -- definitely Athlon XP/MP's and Tbird's, and probably even on a generation older than that.

It's kinda funny that Intel really hasn't changed the instruction set all that much since the Pentium Pro... they've added MMX, SSE, SSE2, and all that, but nothing that makes the core instruction set better.
