I installed woody debian and I have problems with X server, acctually it didn't install the xfree86config file, and when i try to run it with the X it gives me can't locate/open configure file.
Is there any configuration utilities for debian like redhat's linuxconf or drakeconf?
I have @home and when i do ping localhost, it replies. When I do my ip of hostname crXXXX-a.xXXX.XXX.home.com it doesn't work. on my hosts file are
127.0.0.1 crXXXX-a localhost
24.x.x.x crxxxxx-a.XXX.XXX.home.com
Strangly my resolv.conf setuped itself so it has correct dns servers.
Where do I put the netmask and gateway?
TIA
The new configuration file is called XF86Config-4. You could try 'XFree86 -configure' or 'xf86config' to make a config file.
Im not sure about this second one.. all ive got in hosts is 127.0.0.1..
-resolv.conf is written when you start dhcpcd or pump or whatever you use to setup your con.

There is one xft86conf in /etc/X11, but i think it is for the fonts, but not any other conf file.
I think that I did't setup the dhcpd.

strange, mine is xf86config, not xf86config-4. Do I have an older version?? I downloaded the latest Debian distribution...
and most of the help pages I find are ref'ing configing the -4 one.
Which version are you using Thanatos? Im using woody, which is testing instead of potatoe which is stable..
Sorry moja visost, im confused. If you haven't setup dhcp how do you have that hostname? You'd need to use dhcpcd/pump to set up your nic for that IP.
How far have you got?

I think xf86config is included in xserver-common, so if you have that you should have xf86config

hello all
Well I got at formatting the woody and putting back good ol' Mandrake 8.0 :D
I got xfconfig-4 when I put xfree86 3.x before that there was no conf files for X. but still I couldn't configure it for my ati mach64 which is strange because mach64 is standard but there was no drivers for it!!!
I got the hostname and ip manually, but no idea how dns ips were put in resolv.conf because i didn't reboot or use pump/dchp.
Is it woody supposed to be based on 2.4 kernel? my was on 2.2.19?

You needed xserver-mach64 if you wanted to run X3 With X4 you don't. Woody is based on 2.2.19, you have to upgrade the kernel yourself which is really a snap.
