i have a Zoom Internal 56K LT Voice Faxmodem,...been to their website
and they say linux is supported,...i've loaded Mandrake 8.2 and it's
having trouble detecting my modem,...i've read something about needing
to disable plug n play,...could that be the source of my problem?
and since i'm keeping my win98, (but on a seperate hardrive) will i need
to change my plug n play depending on what system i'm booting into?
thanks.

Disable PnP in your bios and hopefully your pci modem will be detected and configured.
All Windows versions will do fine with PnP disabled.

ok, my modem's not a PCI slot, but a ISA slot modem,...sorry
i didn't mention that,...i also went to mandrake's website
and found a list of hardware that's compatible with
mandrake linux, and the only Zoom modem they had listed
that supported 'is' a PCI version,...
however, if you think it's still worth a try then i'll try it,...
and should i disable the plug n play on the board itself? with
the jumpers?
thanks.

Would the modem HOWTO (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html) help? See section 2.4.

Disabling PnP OS in the bios is always a good idea if your bios has that option and you are using Linux.
Does your ISA modem have jumpers for the irq and i/o?
If jumpered,
cat /proc/interrupts
cat /proc/ioports
to find out what is available on your system. Change the jumpers on the ISA modem to whatever is not being used.
If non-jumpered, use the dos configuration utility that is usually included on the modem's driver diskette or downloadable from the manufacturers website.
Use that utility to disable PnP on the ISA modem and change the irq and i/o as outlined above.
