Who boots into the GUI and who boots to a terminal?

Ok, my first poll, sorry for replying to myself.

I boot to a terminal and login as a user, not root. Then if I want to use the GUI I run startx.

I boot to the CL most of the time, but my *nix box sits right beside the Windows box. I must admit, every once in a while i'll change the ole' runlevel just to see that nice *nix login screen when I'm sick of looking at the plain old Win2k screen. Kinda silly, I know, but you asked :-)

My option isn't included. I boot to XDM.

[13:04 - 1.01]
[Frodo 1] ~ > dpkg -s x-window-system
Package: x-window-system
Status: unknown ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

[13:04 - 1.09]
[Frodo 2] ~ > dpkg -s xserver-xfree86
Package: xserver-xfree86
Status: unknown ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

And just to add to the question: "Why the hell don't you have X installed?"

[13:05 - 1.14]
[Frodo 3] ~ > cat /proc/pci |grep ATI
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon QD (rev 0).

I need a CLUE.

The command line always works. After my first "x-filles" loop experience, I reverted to runlevel 3.

Command line here...looks like cli is winning a landslide victory so far.

The Gimp doesn't work so well for me from the commandline, so I use both. The right tool for the job.

*grins*

CLI is always working .. I muck too often with XFree ... CVS, DRI, try little tweaks here'n there...

can always fire up KDM on Alt-Cntl-F7

I kinda do both. As I said, I boot to XDM, and when I'm logged into Blackbox, all my work is done on three open Eterms. So why X in the first place? Tools like Opera, xmms, licq, AbiWord, etc require it.

The CLI is cool.

Who's that Spartan bootin' a TTY...?

It's me! It's me! :D

I boot into the CLI, but I'm in X almost all the time doing work on Eterms like Xconsole. It's nice to be able to refer to several terminals at once without having to switch consoles.

Boot to KDE and GNOME

Like the Programs that come with GNOME (ie nautalis and Galeon gnome ICU) and the interface of KDE. Wish I could change KDE to use Nautalis by default when you click the HOME button on the DESKTOP

I boot to the CLI and use 'startx', except right now I'm having xerver issues :(

I voted with a check mark next to terminal, not because I'm a terminal freak (which I am definitely not), but simply because there are times when I'd rather do something at the CLI first. Those times are becoming fewer and fewer and I find myself just logging in as my normal user and going into a GUI.

I'm very thankful to be working with an OS on my personal system that allows me to do whatever works as I see fit, not as someone else wants me see fit :D .

I boot to GDM for advocacy reasons - I want people to look at the screen and go 'Cool' straight away - I like the whirring text of the lappy booting up, and then the *blink* into X :)

GDM because it's easy to setup, and I haven't fixed my b0rked KDE3 install yet ;)

Gee, I don't have an audience, MrBen, does that mean I'm bad :( ?
