With some apps when i try to open them with a user account, they open for a second and then close right away. The only way i can open certain apps is through root, which i dont want to use unless i have to for something.

Is this happening through a window manager, like KDE or WindowMaker?
If so, then it is telling you an error - it just doesn't display because there's no console up. I've had this problem with a few proggies before. Try starting whatever programs up through a console and seeing what output they produce, then come back here and post the error (if any). I could be wrong - it might be something else. But this is a good place to start, no?

Can you name some of the apps you're having trouble with and how you're using them?

I first experienced this problem trying to use appfinder to find some apps i just installed. Now im having this same problem with LICQ.
