If I add a new hardware to my computer how do I install the drivers for the hardware?

really depends on the hardware you are installing. Sometimes you have to build a custom kernel, sometimes drivers are available and sometimes you can build the module, but will need the kernel source install (ie. nvidia drivers)

for example I am installing a PCMCIA zip drive. What do I have to do?

I'm not sure what modules are required for a pcmcia zip drive, but I would think these Google for Linux search results for "pcmcia zip drive" (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=pcmcia+zip+drive) should tell you.
