Okay now I am running SuSE 8.0... again. I had a `Drake 8.2 install running just fine until I tried to play CivCTP. I bought this game and have all the current patches for it, and I have been playing it off and on for 3+ years now in linux. Well a couple of nights ago I was playing as usual and something very bad happened.... the system failed with a kernel panic! I was able to reboot and the ReiserFS performed as designed. But after that all was fragged. The system was totally unstable. Numerous aps wouldn't open or if they did the system would lock up or just stop responding.

So in total frustration I tried to figure out WTF but since I just had major surgery on my left shoulder and I am under the influence of pain and narcotics, I said screw it and tried SuSE 8.0. Well for some reason this install <shift to whisper mode>seems stable</shift to whisper mode> but there are some minor issues that are annoying. Here is the biggest one,

I started to use Open Officce more regularly in the `Drake 8.2 install, because it actually worked and printed and worked. So I wanted to continue to use it in SuSE 8.0 and it works fine except.... now I can't print! And I haven't figured out how to get the OO print drivers located / installed.

Here is the error message:

"No default printer found. Please choose a printer and try again."

So I fire up the OO Print Utility and get this:

Nothing!

I found the directory where the driver should be and there is nothing there. So now what? I have zero clue as to how yo connect to the CUPS drivers and have them work with OO.

Any ideas?

This always works for me and allows me to print with any application.

KDE Control Center under System/Printing Manager and make sure your printer is setup correctly.

Then under System/Startup/Services I enable CUPS Line Printer Daemon and Print Server (CUPS).

Works everytime...

Have you configured your printer using yast2? make sure the printer is on before you do this. If this was your problem OO printing might work although I am not 100% on this.

All my other apps print just fine
1 - StarOffice 5.2
2. Netscape 7.0 Beta
3. Konqueror
4. KWord
5. Adobe Acrobat Reader

And so on, but Open Office won't. And I can't find the Open Office drivers. Trust me I have looked all through the system files for OO.

I'll check my OpenOffice setup when I get to work and let you know if I find anything that might help.

I've just printed a Word doc that includes print screens and it prints beautifully using OpenOffice.

As I said in my previous post, all I do is setup the printer through the KDE Control Center and ensure CUPS Line Printer Daemon and Print Server (CUPS) are both enabled.

In OpenOffice under Printer Setup, I have

Name - Generic Printer
Status - Default Printer
Type - SGENPRT

In the Properties, I have

Postscript Level - from driver
Color - from driver

All my KDE apps print without any problems including Konqueror, Netscape, OpenOffice, KOffice, KEdit etc.

Kinda strange how so many recommend Redhat, Mandrake, SuSE, Debian  , Slack etc. and have so many, many problems.

I install the latest version of Caldera's OpenLinux Workstation, and EVERYTHING works.

Strange isn't it?

But I'm happy...

OK, guys.

I got mine working after many attempts.

I uninstalled lpr.
I manually removed all cups files from previous attempts.
I installed cups 1.1.14
i ran #/etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start
i browsed to localhost:631 and installed my
printer. i printed a test page.
i opened the gimp. i chose a file, right clicked, File...Print... and configured my printer. i printed a test page.
I opened OpenOffice Printer Administration.
I configured the default driver (actually, i just made sure it said what the post above said it should). i printed a test page.

Hooray!

I'm really diggin slackware.
