Okay, I managed to mount my windows drive and get at my tunez. I'm running XMMS, which is very swank by the way, but about every other song or so I get the following error message:

Couldn't Open Audio:
Please Check that:

1. You have correct output plugin selected
2 No other program is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly

------------------------------

The songs sound great. I'm using an SB Live! card with Harman Kardon Surround Sound and it sounds great. Why would I get that error? I read something on the XMMS site about RH 7.3 and a problem with the CD plugin or something. But I'm not playing CD's, so I disabled that plugin and I still get the error.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you considered the second possibility xmms gives you? Xmms closes and reopens the audio device between songs, it's possible that some other app (gnome/kde event sounds?) snatches the device in this short time interval, and when xmms wants to start playing again it can't.

If you think this is the case, you can try using alsa as your sound driver, it works around this problem nicely.

I'll look into system sounds with Gnome. Thanks!

Yeah, I have all system sounds disabled. I think I might try using KDE and see if I still get it. But if you say it's on different window managers then it's gotta be something...

can anyone help?

I have the same problem... at first it was working fine, then I started messing around with the output plugins (why did I do that?!???) and since then I haven't been able to play anything... :( :(

(I've tried ALSA aswell...)

I'm using freeamp instead now. :) :D

I am tryign to get the alsa-xmms plugin to install/compile so I can use xmms with my alsa drivers. 2.4.17 kernel, debian woody is the system.

I am using the latest alsa drivers of the site and I found the xmms-alsa pluging... when I run ./configure
I get the following error:

*** The xmms-config script installed by XMMS could not be found.
*** If XMMS was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the XMMS_CONFIG environment variable to the

Load oss emulation and you can use xmms as it is. The modules you need are snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss.

But if you really want to compile the plugin, you probably needs to install the devel packages for xmms, glib and gtk (and maybe others as well).

got it working with ALSA now. I ran a program called "alsaconf" in a console window (used the "su" command first to get root access). After I had run that xmms worked fine using the ALSA output plugin. Btw. I had to shutdown ALSA first by running "rcalsasound stop" before running alsaconf... it says on the first screen when starting alsaconf...

good luck! ;)

if nothing else works, try using "aRts output plugin". you might need
to download it first though...

for those who still have the problem:
Each time I have that, it's because I selected a bad output plugin. You can change it by going to the xmms menu -> options -> preferences.
then you'll see this:
Output plugin
<pulldown menu>

in that pulldown menu, you probably have the choice between arts, esound & oss. try them all and see which one works. if that doesn't help, check the permissions of /dev/dsp.
should be something like this:
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Jan 3 2000 /dev/dsp
if those permissions are correct, be sure the sound module is loaded.
edit (as root) /etc/modules. those with an SB Live! card need this in it:
emu10k1
