I went looking through linuxiso.org and found a distro called Lycoris. Just like the title says, it's linux for your grandma. I do have to admit though, it hit the network and even auto mounted the Windows partition. It is very MS looking but, with KDE 2.2.2 and almost no way of installing KDE3 on it (I am still trying to get it to install.) it is basic X with a few programs. It's great for beginners, or for people who want to have Linux on thier system and lock it down for thier kids to use. It does have 2.4.18 kernel on it but like I said...KDE 2.2.2 and that is it. If you download it, try to do a make...it's not happening.

Lycoris used to be called Redmond Linux. I think it's Debian based, but I may be mistaken-- it could be RedHat.

It was meant to be an OS for the masses, kind of like Windows, but IMHO if I were setting up a box for the masses, I'd just use Mandrake...

From what I remember of the installer, it was based around Lizard, which was the installer from Caldera OpenLinux. Couldn't say from the rest of it - didn't finish the install (just curiousity at the time).

Looked fairly nice to me - they did some sensible stuff with the KDE menus, which I think are now being incorporated into Mandrake, and they just installed one app for each function to ease confusion.

Best of luck to them - I hope they don't get tarred with the Lindows brush, though.

Oh, and it's Xandros that's the next Debian base distro (used to be Corel, remember ;) )

Yeah it's Lizard. Installation was actually a breeze for this distro. Even gave you solitaire while it installed. No options to choose packages though. I had to pull the dev stuff off the 3rd disk. On the Mandrake thing, some of the directory structure is real Mandrake like as well.
One thing people will like is the software installer (Mandrakish as well). But oh man did KDE3 do a number on Lycoris, lol. Good thing I never really got serious with it because once you put the KDE3 libs in, the system no longer recognizes GUI commands. Of course this was out of curiosity as well so I am not going to spend all day fixing it. I just basically wanted to see what would happen and how this version was. If anyone has had luck upgrading it, please post your results as I am sure there are allot of people who would like to see it. Next OS...Mandrake beta 9.0 r3. Should be interesting.

Lizard is a great installer.

Pity you didn't try Caldera's OpenLinux instead.

Caldera was the first to introduce a graphical installer.
