I'm using red hat7 and need to upgrade 2.4.x to support some extra hardware. how should i do it? i've read the redhat page and follow what they did http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/kernel-upgrade/ , it didn't work!!
in their ftp update sites, i've found only some of the kernel rpms, which one should i be getting? also, is i386 or i686? i have a P3 system. I have just randomly picked some rpms, like kernel-VERSION-i386.rpm and try to install, and i get a bunch of dependencies. And all of them are not on the ftp itself. I've tried them on the web and they are all for red hat 7.1. how exactly can i upgrade my kenerl?? is reinstall to 7.1 neccesarry? thanks a tons

I've never used RH but from what I've read I'd take everything RH says with a pinch of salt.
--->MAKE SURE you're running a decent gcc compiler like egcs-2.91.66 or gcc-2.95.3 IIRC.
Use the PLAIN vanilla Linux kernels (try to stay away from 2.4.9 - I've read ppl have lots of issues with it.) and most important of all: read '/linux/Documentation/changes' every time you get another kernel, that way you KNOW you got all the right utils.
Maybe your RH varsion is geared for compiling 2.2.x kernels.

<EDIT> And try the NHF, it's based on RH.

well i have never used redhat aswell slack 8 here but kernel config and compile "can be a pain somtimes"

first read the kernel howto

locations of suchs docs can be found at www.linu.com (http://www.linux.com) in there howto section

i belive there is a NHF here and finally

u can find (if u installed em) all the how to's mini howto's and documentation

normaly located in /usr/doc

i was haveing problems with the kernel till i read the kernel howto so id say it will be a safe bet i mean really read it dig trough it word for word :) :)

good luck :)
