I have managed to get hold of the makings of a second box that I would like to be purely linux. I have yet to put it together and was wondering if because its a pretty minimum spec machine will kde/gnome run ok.
Cyrix 300 cpu
64MB
Has anyone any experience with lower spec machines they could share.
TIA

That will be fine, since ram is so incredibly cheap right now dropping some more in it wouldn't hurt though. You might want to make sure there's some decent video card drivers also, rendering all the 2d stuff in software on a slow cpu makes everything seem a lot slower.

Yep...definitly more ram. KDE/Gnome are notorious for being ram hogs ;)

Cyrix huh?
You using EDO RAM?
In that case: the prices are going UP!
So hurry.
I'm running a P200 w/64MB EDO RAM and yes, I too wish I had more but buying nowadays doesn't make sense.
I'm waiting for the next round of AMD/INTEL and ATI/nVidia pricewars to subside. :)
