Has anyone had problems installing Mandrake 8.0 on a Dell Inspiron 4000?

Hi!

I have not done so but Mandrake has one of the most newbie-friendly installation around. I would think that it should install witout too much problems.

I would suggest checking out Mandrake's site to check for support for your hardware. You might want to take a look at www.linux-laptop.net (http://www.linux-laptop.net)

Hope this helps :)

In installed Mandrake 7.1 on a Dell Inspiron 3500. The whole process was almost painless and I might even like Linux after all!

I get a few errors during shutdown:

==>Saving mixer settings aumix: error opening mixer [FAILED]

==>Unmounting file systems end_request: I/O Error, dev 02:00 (floppy) sector 0

The process dies. If I hit cntrl/alt/delete, the process starts again and eventually, all I have left is to power off. I do not have the floppy drive installed in the laptop and rarely use it.

During startup, I get the following messages:

==>/dev/hda1 not cleanly unmounted.
==>/dev/hda6 not cleanly unmounted.

They get checked and properly shut, which takes a while to complete.

The last problem is my 3Com/Megahertz 3CCE589ET Ethernet adapter. Linux does not recognize it, 3Com's Megahertz support section is dead, Dell is pretty useless and searches result in more dead links, dead ends and no driver. Any suggestion as to where I can get a driver?

I use Microsoft Outlook 2000 (not Express). Is there a product that does email, calendar, scheduling and contact information like Outlook does?

I have had a tremendous amount of trouble getting Mandrake 8.0 to work on my 8000. The GeForce2Go is a pain in the butt to get going, at least for me. I can get a perfectly functional cli system, but no X. :(

JAlU: What type of errors are you getting?

I've got a I8k and I've been fighting with it (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=022335), but finally got it partially working. Post some more info, and we can help.

I had trouble with Mandrake 7.2 on a Gateway laptop. But only because it didn't support the Savage IX video drivers. 'drake 8.0 may very well support those now.

My brother is friends with a programmer over at Mandrake. The word is to avoid Mandrake 8.1 beta for now. It's pretty horrid. Also, I've run into many problems when trying to update from Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0 So be carful there.

But a clean install of 8.0 should be OK.

Any ideas where I can research the shutdown/start up problems?

Personally I would start a new thread if you are having problems. After all, this one was started by someone else.

You'll most likely get more help that way.

I've got slack running on my laptop. Heh, I don't even think Drake would install on it, considering the 233mhz processor and the 32mb of ram (soon to be 64mb)

I'm on the bleeding edge of technology ;)

Shutdown/startup problems fixed.

The system always complained about un-mounting the floppy that was not plugged in. I plugged in the floppy, now it comes down and back up just fine.
