Hi fellas,

I'm in a bit of a bind here regarding my PPP connection via KPPP in either SuSE 7 or Red Hat 7.

In Red Hat, what happens is (while vieweing the log in KPPP) that the modem will dial, connect to my ISP, and then start pppd... it stalls at that point and I'm eventually dropped. BTW... I can connect to my ISP using the RH Dialer.

In SuSE 7 it's very similar yet slightly different problem: If I successfully connect once to my ISP and then later disconnect only to later reconnect again... I get the same exact symptom with KPPP in Red Hat. In SuSE I'm using KInternet not KPPP.

I've spent a fair amount of time trying to find a solution for all of this via faq's, prior posts in forums, knowledge bases, etc... but nothing seems to work. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

My modem is a Gateway Telepath 56K FAX/Voice... it's really a branded US Robotics Sportster 56K.

Any wizards out there with some ideas or suggestions as to what it could be... I am all ears. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks,

-Bruce

Hey, I know how you feel about banging your head over different distros. I hate doing that don't you? Don't you just wish you could point and click your way to getting online? I have an answer:

WINDOWS 2000

Sure it's a lot of money. But as they say: you get what you pay for. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I am by no means an expert on point-to-point protocol and a DSL line has relieved me from
the stress of getting it to work right, but look at the configuration file in /etc/ppp/options. Make sure that there is line that says "noauth" and that it is uncommented (no # in front of the line).
I seem to remember this helping me before.
More than likely it is configuration problem than an hardware issue. If I come across anything more I'll reply. I just thought of one more thing, check the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file also. If the information is not what your ISP is looking for your connection will be dropped. (just a shot in the dark)

Goughmezz: I appreciate the advice but I'm already a Win98/2K user. I have to use Win32 irregardless for a variety of reasons, however, Windows bores me so I wanted to explore another OS... and Linux *is* that OS. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

SCuSI: Thanks much for your suggestions... the "noauth" tip is something that I have not yet tried. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
