I just got redhat 7.0, and the nvidia drivers for my Geforce 2 don't work. I got the rpm (the not for smp, because I have 2 proc.)
My first suspicion is that I need a later version of Xfree86. Anyone else have this problem? Or better yet know how to fix it?
The error X gives me is accessing /dev/nvidiactl
When I installed the rpm it told me it was installed correctly, but before that it said something like could not probe NVdriver.

you are running xfree86 4.01 and NVidea driver 0.95, right? I think the Gforce2 also needed an version of xfre86 newer than 4.01 (get it by CVS).

There is no non-src rpm for RH7. In fact, the drivers don't work at all. At least, not for my TNT.
If you really want to chance it, you can get the tarballs and compile it yourself. Remember to use kgcc to compile it (switch the cc symlink in /usr/bin from gcc to kgcc). Verify the kernel module is installed and then go onto GLX. Then go into XF86Config and uncomment the load glx line and switch the driver to nvidia. Restart X.
The most I've gotten is into Unreal Tournament for 5 minutes before it locks up everything. Sometimes I get lucky and it drops me to X. Most of the time however, I need to telnet in and reboot from there.
Overall, the quality is very nice until it crashes.
Oh last thing, Parsec works fine.
nvidia is working on a fix but don't hold your breath. Btw, Loki listed the kgcc option as a fix for it but I didn't see any difference. You could try with the GeForce.
Let me know how it turns out to see if I missed something.

I run said drivers and card fine. Read all the documentation on the Nvidia faq and it makes specific reference to the Geforce 2. X 4.01 works fine without having to use CVS build. Just download the source rpm's and follow the compilitaion directions from the Nvidia web site. IT WILL WORK, I've done it on my computer and my roomates, with the tarballs and the source RPM's. If you get stuck email me at rssvihla@hotmail.com

But he's running RH7 and I saw on Loki's page that there was a conflict there.
Did this refer to an old build or something because it seems to me that it's near impossible to get working.
I am toying with the idea of getting kernel 2.2.16-21 so I could use the normal rpm.

and I run Red Hat 7.0 fine. The drivers aren't perfect but most of the issues relate to symlinking the 3d apps to new drivers. Read the faq thoroughly its in there.

*tries the drivers again*
*grumble*
I hate it when I'm wrong. It was kinda funny though. I THOUGHT it had crashed. Instead, it sits there for 5 minutes and then plays normally like nothing had happened. I suppose my problem was that I never let it sit that long.
Kinda weird but still, holy crap it works.

Me too man...glad things worked out for you, like I said they aren't perfect at all, Nvidia has to see the light and open source them before they'll get better. Then they'll be included in Mesa and we'll all be happy.

The kernel driver is open but GL stuff isn't because of the licensing. That's why Mesa is not officially OpenGL.
If you want to get it open sourced, talk to Silicon Graphics.
Yeah I'm glad they work too but I found out that I need a lot more RAM http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif. Still, I know the exact problem: my computer is old.

when you say old, how old? Do you have one of those boxes that can't even run win98 without taking a piss and cooking dinner during startup? Mine I just built six months ago and parts of it I already feel are old and overwhelmed. So its a matter of perspective I guess.

Yeah that would take awhile to load. Particulary if you have mods. Its time for an upgrade if you want to game. Harsh realities. Of course if that isn't your priority your fine for another two years.

Getting RAM (192 or 128 more) for Christmas, processor when I feel like paying outrageous amounts for a label.

well, DDR ram should out about now, Asus sells a DDR capable motherboard. Don't know how much the motherboard is, but the RAM is a slightly higher price ($5 for a 128 mg stick).
You could upgrade your processor for next to nothing (and frankly the difference from the K6-2 to the Duron is obscene, I had a 450 k6-2 that couldn't run D**K and upgraded only a motherboard and the 600 Duron and about doubled my benchmarks. For Graphics the K6-2 is sadly lacking.
