With the massive closure of free isps I am looking for a new one. I've done the search thing on this forum but haven't come up with much on what folks are actually using.
So.... what isp do you use??

Thank God for morons. Without them who would the rest of us have to blame things on!
I use @home but it is far from free.

My college is my ISP provider. Eventhough it is sometimes bogged down and slow, it is FREE. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I work for a university so I get my internet access for free.
If I want cable it's 45 or 50 bucks a month... for DSL is 35 or 45 a month, I think.
I'll take the free dial-up for now. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Johnny:
Startfree.com is a free ISP that is still in business. I don't use it, but suspect they don't do Linux.
Optech:
I have Roadrunner here in NY. It's a bit over $50 U.S per month and the service sucks. Not many outages, but at times I resort to a dialup as it's faster. Unfortunately, they're the only choice in my area for "fast" access.

I use ORI, which is a local ISP owned and operated not 10 minutes from my house. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
In February, my car will be paid off, and then I'm getting DSL from Telocity. I've heard too many good things about them (more than -half- the people I know who have it say they get -faster- speeds than what they even asked for, sometimes by as much as 2-300 k additional/sec!) and, what a stroke of luck, I could throw a small stone and hit my local carrier. Wooo!

Are you getting pretty good download and upload speeds with Telocity? The reason I ask is because Telocity just became available in my area and I'm thinking about getting rid of my @home service. My @home service has become horrible the past month. One day it will work and then the next 2 days it won't. I called @home and they said that they could get someone out to look at the problem in about a week. To me, that's completely unacceptable. I think that current @home customers should receive better service than that.
Thanks.

Dialup is EarthLink.
I have RoadRunner cable at home in L.A. (to far for DSL) and get 1.44Gb down and 295Kb up. $39.95/mo.
If you're slow try the test under Tools at http://www.dslreports.com It will check you local setup and has tweaks to optimize high speed. Defaults tend toward low-speed settings which don't work well with high speed data access.

I use carrier pigeons and a small local ISP. I print out a bunch of barcoded bitcode, wrap it around one of their little skinny legs, apply a piece of duct tape, and send them on their way. Sometime in the next few days, I will get a return pigeon, with the requested data on it. *And* hunting season has been on for a few months now, so they travel faster, but I have much higher packet loss.
Oh, and I have kinda overloaded phiber at work.

Well... My Telocity connection is suppose to go LIVE two months ago. Even after calling tech-support for many times and after 6 trouble shooting tickets, I'm still without Internet connection. Telocity tech stuff is far off from knowledgable even for Windows. I'm currently working on complete package of complain to Telocity management which headquarter is 5 minutes from my home. I currently got 7 pages so far.
They are bad, at least in my case. Can you believe that Tech-support will close trouble shooting tickets without even varifying with customer and checking whether you have actually solved the problem? And the management that allows it?

I have ameritech.net. 56K dial-up in Michigan. My recommendation? Don't waste your time or money with this service. I'm lucky to be hooked up on the fifth ring, it dies too often, if I don't ftp something to keep the line open, it kills the connection after two minutes (they say ten, but two seems to be my average), and tech support blames linux for connection problems in windows.
I'd switch services, but I'm still waiting for cable in our area. In the meantime, ameritech keeps sendin us these DSL flyers. A cynical person might wonder if our dial sucks so we buy DSL...

Im currently using Ispchannel for my cable connection , but this service is supposed to be taken over by the local cable tv company ( cablevision). And they say the access fee is supposed to be reduced too!
Im payin' $39.95 now for cable access and $29.95 for cable tv which I'd LOVE to cancel but my family wont have it. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/mad.gif

I use @home. Right now they will install fro free, give you a free cable modem (and a free nic card if you don't have one) and give you the first 2 months free (well, at least untill next year). I'm still on my free month and so far I think it's great. $39.99 a month. It's worth it.

wow!!! you guys are charged up the *** for internet in the states!!!
some of you were saying your @home sucks?
i get 5 gigs download and 2 gigs upload, i'm capped at 450k/sec (supposedly) but i've hit 750k/sec on a couple sites and average about 250-350 k/sec... my modem is ALWAYS connected (except once, but they sent an email 2 days in advance saying thatmy services would be down between 5-9 on friday, and i was connected again at 7 that night) and it costs me 39.95... the modem is free too... the only thing i could complain about is that my cable company put ads on our digital cable for my TV... i don't watch tv though,so i don't care... (btw, i'm not talking about commercials... the UI on my digital cable box has ads beside the menues...)

wasn't there a way to configure NetZero to work under linux?
For the past three years, my ISP has been GTE (now Verizon, same crappy service, different name) and I recently switched to a small local provider, and I cant tell you how much better the service is. I'll spare you my many horror stories with GTE, but let's just say they are not prepared to be an ISP, let alone a TELCO. Anyone looking to move TO them, I'd have to recommend strongly against that. Go with either a small local provider (better service, you can go down to the office and see them in person) or I've always heard good things about Earthlink. I don't know what it is, even as huge as the "struggle for bandwidth" is, the TELCO's just can't seem to get a clue.
Oh, I forgot to mention, even after three months I'm still getting GTE/Verizon ISP charges on my phone bill, how's that for a reason not to use them?

CornerStone Networks (Virginia) - it's dialup and pretty good. If I can ever get DSL or two-way cable, I'll ditch them, but I'm not holding my breath on high-speed service getting here soon.

been using earthlink for a couple of years.
currently giving a free trial of MSN a shot, though at this point i see no reason to change.
i think i'll try AT&T Worldnet soon - 150 hrs/month for $4.95; i could have three accounts with them for less than i pay for earthlink!
oh yeah: i'm stuck with dialup until some kind of miracle occurs. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

netzero and blue light.
Both of these send your userid and password in an encrypted form. Do a search for posts from Mountainman and visit his web site. He has a link to a file called Rasspy that will log your encrypted userid and password for you to use in linux.
I have been using both netzero and blue light for about a month now, and have had no problems.

I don't pay for internet access nor do I use a free ISP. I got my dial up through a friend who worked at a local isp, free of charge.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Thats me going crazy.
Live in the Pacific Northwest so I still have nocharge.com - just completed a 580 Meg download of Oracle 8.1.7 with no disconnects. Only took about 40+ hours over a three day period.
Other ISPs: Costco but haven't been able to connect today and since Spinway is now owned by Bluelight.com there is no known future on that one.
Freewwwweb.com - gone
Juno - gross excuse of an ISP
Local college - stopped providing the service at $60 per year
NetZero - requires me to re-install every time I try to connect
AltaVista - 1stup.com is gone
Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!
AT & T has a special for 150 hours a month at $5 a month.
QWest has till the end of the month $20 per month for unlimited DSL - but my wife will not allow me to subscribe until I have lost all other chances through less expensive ISPs http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

I've been using AT&T Worldnet for two years under Linux and never had a problem...ok i'll admit it maybe twice, when their dns servers went down (named daemon came in handy). They use chap so the only thing i had to watch out for is when setting up pppd to use it instead of pap.Hope this helps.

I get DSL through Speakeasy.net. They've been pretty good so far, but a little on the pricey side out here. If you're thinking of going DSL, I recommend them. They even support Linux. It took them about 12 days from initial sign-up to final install, and they made all of their appointments. Sometimes during the daytime it gets bogged down, but I usually get consistent downloads, occasionally going over my rated bandwidth. Overall, a pretty good carrier.
I used to use Freelane from Excite for free Dial-up. They weren't bad but they weren't great either.

Earthlink DSL. I have no complaints except that I wanted their self install package and they kept insisting "we install for free, we send someone out." I gave up and let the technician come out. Young guy that new a little of what he was doing. I had to install 98 on a machine for him to have something to do. He left with a copy of Mandrake 7.0 and a getting started with Mandrake. Covad = 1hr install on 98; SCuSI = 5 min install on linux.
i use ntl, £20 a month for cable access
