i setup X 3.whatever using xf86config. it setup fine. when i do "startx", it goes into the gray screen with the mouse curser, and hangs. it doesn't go into gnome (my default). when i hit <ctrl><alt>backspace, it goes back to the terminal. but it doesn't give me any errors. any thoughts?

what does your .xinitrc file look like? that is the only thing that hs messed up, x works but the window manager does not.

That's right, it starts x, but you don't have any window manager/desktop programs that will run. Create a file in your ~ directory called .xinitrc and add a line like:

exec icwm

or

exec gnome-session (I think)

Save it and try using startx again.

you probably already know this, but when you set up your video card, did you get the same grey screen? If you did, and not a screen with something on it, you may have a problem with the video card.
