Hey Guys !

I have a kinda big problem . I jus got my new box and assembled all together . After that i installed Debian with the unofficial 2.2.17-ReiserFS boot floppys . That worked fine so far . Afterwards i upgraded X to 4.0.3 so that my geforce2 vga card was supported . Then i wanted to upgrade to Kernel 2.4.6 ( mainly to make my soundcard work - and because i like to be up to date :)) )
Kernel compile worked fine . Then i rebooted and nothing worked anymore . I got while starting up a Kernel panic . I booted my old Kernel and made the modules and installed them but that didnt change anything . One time it did boot - but then i got an segmentation fault as i was trying to load modconf. The same with kernel 2.4.5 . In between i installed the up to date versions of modconf , modutils etc. from the ~bunk guy . But that didnt change anything either .
Now iam so far that sound works if i force an sound module from the 2.2.17 version . Stil i would like to use the 2.4.5 or 2.4.6 version .
Can anybody help me ? I dont have any idea what i could have made wrong . Especially coz it is such a weird error . Never had that before !

Thanx in advance ,

David  :(

Ok i found out now that every time i recompile i get a "malign function=4" in nearly every line . But it compiles till the end . I have never seen that before . Can it be that i use the wrong compiler or so ?

If it's just a warning, then I doubt it'd cause something as serious as segfaults in the kernel later on. And if it isn't a warning, then the kernel wouldn't compile, right?

Ok the problem is solved . What i did was that i compiled the kernel with a different setting for the processor . It did fine with the setting for the K6/K7 . I dont know why but now it works fine as far as i can see it .

Do you get an error about a NULL pointer dereference? Thats what I have been getting. I've been thinking it was probably USB since thats when I started having problems. My computer(cel466) starts up about a third of the time. The problem is once I get it started up I forget about the prob. I guess I don't restart enough to have it bother me. I would like to get it fixed though.
