I am learning about window managers etc. and have wondered whether there are any web pages that discuss all the config files in the various directories (where they are, what they do, where ALL X11-related ones are, etc.) for the benefit of new linux users. The best I can find is discussion of the directories and what they are used for, but that isn't specific enough.
Thanks very much in advance.

Perhaps you could try xfree86.org and read docs there.
Basically there are three kinds of config files related to X11 and windows mangaers.
1.Main X configuration files reside in /etc/X11 and relate to X and how it behaves.
2.Window managers (gnome,kde,bb...others) have their own dirs where most of general configs reside.
3.Window manger config files specific to given user reside in users home directory eg.
.gnome,.kde where you'd find config pertaining to your wm.
This is the way i understand and know there's much more than that but it should give ya at least some general idea.If someone has better explenation or links i'd like to know too.

I don't know of anything that will provide an overfiew for ALL config files... but if you're browsing your HD and you see a config file that you want to know more about, try going to google.com and seaching for "config.file HOWTO" (or better yet, if you know what program the config file is for, search for "program HOWTO") And you should get lots of information about that program and what you can do with the config file.
