I'm currently working my way through the Linux-From-Scratch http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ setup, and after a few initial problems everything is progressing (compiling) smoothly.

What I'm looking to find out is, who amongst you has tried the LFS system and what are your thoughts on it. Good, bad, prefer a straight distro, whatever comes to mind, rant away.

Bear in mind that I'm a relative linux newbie, although I've found the page easy to follow.

I havn't got the whole thing to work for me but I do like what I've been able to get working. It's nice, fast and you can pick what ever package system (or none >:-)) on your distro!

Had a look at that website, don't know if i want to build a complete new Linux installation, but is there a way i can get a basic installation(for a PII system,i believe it's a 686 based kernel)?

Kinda like a minimal Windows installation.

And then i could install the progs i need after that.

Any help would be most appreciated!
