Ok, I am on the precipice of installing RedHat7.3 on my machine but need to know one thing before I do... does there exist in the Linux world a free word processor that can read or save to .doc if I needed to? Any thing for spreadsheets also?
PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

Yes,
check out openoffice.org (http://openoffice.org).
If you are using Gnome (http://gnome.org), abiword (http://abisource.com) supports word documents, and gnumeric (http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/)supports excell spreadsheets.
If you are using KDE (http://kde.org), Koffice will support these as well.

Actually OpenOffice (free) and StarOffice (not so free) as discussed quite often in these forums.
I find searching the application database at freshmeat.net to be very helpful when trying to locate specific applications.
