I am running 2.2.17 .Is the lastest 2.4 a good idea to upgrade? Is 2.4 much faster and stable than 2.2.17? I don't want to waste time if they are similar(performance!!).

Mine boots slightly faster. But in the big it is all the new stuff that is good with 2.4. In my opinion at least.

If there's nothing wrong right now, then I'd wait until there's an official stable 2.4 kernel out before messing with it. The 2.2 series is getting stuff back-ported from the 2.4 test kernels too, if you want to get 2.2.18 or a 2.2.19pre kernel.
