I use Redhat 6.0.

I am trying to install rpms as suggested in the RH Updates and Errata section.

Many time I try to install something and I get this error:

"only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version of RPM"

For instance, this happened when I was trying to install: gnorpm-0.95.1-5.i386.rpm

I didn't think 5 was the major number...or is it?

How do I fix this issue so that I can update my system?

ANY help is appreciated!!

THANKS!

mka,

I just had the exact same problem. Go to http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/index.html. Once there, pick your version of Red Hat, and install the rpm update exactly like they say. For 6.2 it is rpm -Fvh [the package that you are installing]. There were 5 files that I had to install for 6.2. It looks like for 6.0, there is only one file named rpm (RHEA-1999:018-01). I don't know if this will completely fix the problem, or if you have to update that too, since I had to update my 6.2 to get around the same problem.

Hope this helps.

There is a program that lets you automatically download and install rpms. See www.aduva.com. (http://www.aduva.com.)
