They are completely different programs. pranavpeshwe 08-14-2002, 12:38 PM Wine is an 'emulator' which translates Windoze API into Linux runnable code. On the other hand VMWare creates a Virtual Machine which can be felt as a separte computer.Separte RAM has to be reserved for the VM.It handles all the requests for that OS running inside it.The OS feels as if it has been giving separate hardware and memory. I personally think wine is better, because 1) Its free 2)Large no of heads are currently working on it,and the supported softwares are increasing. 3) VMWare transforms my Celeron into a 386 when running Win98 thru WinXP 4)And most important is that you need not have Windoze installed to use Wine, while you have to have the OS which you want to run in the VM. Also you have to install all the hardware drivers and (try to)configure them in the new VMed OS. NecroLin 08-14-2002, 12:42 PM Vmware is $$$$$$ expensive:eek: trilarian 08-14-2002, 01:59 PM With all the vmware bashing I thought it would be appropiate to note that wine does not support a lot of complex programs(at least my version) like Adobe Photoshop 7.0, 3DS MAX 3.1, or Protel 99SE. I got all three of these to work with vmware. And sometimes the seperate OS is good. I have people who use this computer that are not used to linux yet, so they turn on vmware then fullscreen it and they think they are running Windows. So it really depends on the application. X_console 08-14-2002, 04:07 PM I would also say vmware is better if you're planning on doing a lot of things with Windows. Although WINE is certainly evolving quickly, there are still programs that either don't work at all, or just work partially. Under vmware, they will work. Of course if you just want to run a few programs from Windows that are just better than the Linux alternative, then WINE is definately the way to go. medrewsclues 08-15-2002, 07:47 AM ok, i see now. thankyou justlinux.com
