I'm not sure if this belongs here but I have a couple questions about email:

1. Is there any way to access Hotmail other than through a browser? Like through some email client for linux...

2. If not, are there any free email services that allow you to send and recieve email through an email client?

3. What's the best email client thingy mabobber for linux?

Thank you!

I don't think you can access Hotmail with a third party client. You'd have to either log into hotmail through your browser.... or be using microsoft outlook or outlook express. I'm not sure about any other free email services.

As for email clients.. Evolution is pretty good.... I usually just use Mozilla's built in mail client.

I use Netscape Messenger. Alot of people here like Mutt. The only other one I've used is Pine, which is pretty good. Mutt and Pine don't have GUIs, though, if you care about that.

I use KMail, although it lacks some of the "polish" that I've come to expect from mail clients, so I wouldn't really recommend it to anybody. I'm still kind of experimenting with email clients, though.

However, I know a bit about hotmail. I remember that MS offered a service where you could get full pop3 access to your hotmail mail (this means you can access it with an email client), although it was expensive and really not worth it. There is no way for Outlook to do this, it has no such ability. You can pay MS for the pop3 and use any email client you want, or not pay for the pop3 and use any browser you want...

Doesn't your ISP give you a mail account? mine does and by virtue of it being full pop3 alone, it's far superior to anything I could get on the net for free. And because it's essentially free (payment is included with ISP charges), all the better.

MS has decided not to allow hotmail to have any interoperability with any email clients but outlook express. For pop email there are many providers, do some research. The easiest way to set it up is through balsa, it has a ¨wizard¨ that lets you set up an email account, or use netscape´s email client (which also has a wizard).

Try Sylpheed. It is a very FAST and STABLE gui e-mail client. It won't help you with hotmail but....

There's a Perl script called "gotmail" which is on freshmeat and available in the Debian archive, which claims to be able to retrieve messages from a Hotmail account and forward them to another address. Don't know if it actually works though.

I use yahoo mail and KMail.

I'm sure theres a way to check hotmail outside of outlook or a web browser since hotmail is based on HTML and HTTP. All you'd have to do is make a client sorta filter through the webpage content and make it look like its checking email.
