I have no idea why I'm having problems figuring this out, but...

Anyway, a friend of mine who has NT 4.0 on his computer would like to install Win98 and Linux on to it. He already has two partitions set aside for the two operating systems, but I don't know how to edit the boot.ini file. I have been trying to install 98 first then Linux (that is also how he wants it done too), but the 98 install gives me some weird error about MSDOS having something on the boot thing or whatever and won't install. I've used 'format c: /s' for the partition he wants to install 98 on and I added the partition to the boot.ini file with 'm:\="Windows 98" /win95' (m: is the drive letter according to NT, but it's c: according to 98). When I try to boot the partition, I get some weird error with the different registers on screen. I don't know how to work with the boot.ini file. Can anyone help me on this?

Linux, the only one with the Penguin.

The problem isn't actually Linux, it's Windows. It would be a LOT easier if NT was on one physical drive and 98 was on another. Then you could hook op only one drive as "Single" and install NT". Then take that physical drive out and install teh other physical drive as a "single" and install Windows 98.

Put the drives back in with the NT drive as the master and the 98 drive as the slave. Use NT Loader to switch between NT and 98. (See the How-To on NT and Linux to see how to do this)

Then, on which ever drive you left room for Linux you install Linux. Once again, use NTLoader against it'self to add a line to the start menu to run Linux.

The problem I've had in the past has been trying to install either NT or 98 on a drive that already has the other OS on it. Microsoft products do not play nice with each other. Hence the removing and adding drives trick.

I haven't installed NT4 (thankfully), but I had no problem installing Win98 first, then installing win2k afterwards. This way the ntloader automagically configured my bootini and I just added an entry for Linux. Following the NT loader howto was really simple.
