Ok, so I've been round and round with this Mandrake install, and through various attempts including CD-ROM, HDD, FTP, NFS, and HTTP, (all on local network), and every time it craps it has something to do with either the [bad] ramdisk or kernel panic - unable to mount root fs (on the HDD). I have run into the kernel panic issue before and using different media to install fixed it with Red Hat, plus it may be an issue caused by whatever's going wrong with the fsckin' ramdisk...
*Spent way too long on this already*
grrr...

Been a long time since I have done a 'drake/RH install - are you sure you have good floppies?
Why not plan on getting me tomorrow PM and I can maybe talk ya thru it, or better, a Slackware install http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I'd druther do a slack install, but ph34r I don't have enough experience...
BTW: I've tried the drake install every which way (CD boot, floppy, network, even copying the whole dir to a local drive)...
I had similar probs in RH... I think there's something in my hardware. I know my video card is not recognized, but it should run fine with the vga server, I am not even doing a graphical Drake install...
hrmph..
BTW: I am trying to conf an irc client to run through my firewall @ home as I type this, so mebé I'll get up w/ you tonight.

i ran into the ram disk problem when i tried to install onto a slightly overclocked machine. set the fsb back a mere 6mhz and installation went along just fine.
i think that i also found some info at either www.mandrakeuser.org (http://www.mandrakeuser.org) or at www.linux-mandrake.com (http://www.linux-mandrake.com) that addressed the problem, but while i did give it a try, it didn't help me and i don't remember the specifics.
btw, this is all with regard to mdk 7.0

Slack isn't any harder than mandrake or redhat... but you *should* be able to install any of them.
Could you have gotten a bad download of the ISO? Hop back on that phat pipe and get a new iso, and check the md5sums on it. Be sure to use binary format to download it also.

perc, I'm gonna go with Ph34r on this one. Slack isn't too bad; your forum info says you've been here since Jun 2000, so you've had 7 months (or so) to practice and hone your linux skills. Remember that I only used Redhat when I got into linux. I didn't pay for tech support or any other fun things. After six months of teaching myself, I installed Slackware and use it to this day.
it's not that much different from Redhat, IMHO. If you think it looks attractive, do it. You'll never learn it if you hold off. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/tongue.gif
Just look at me: I have a Debian 2.2 set that I've never installed, and probably never will. Why? Just in case I couldn't use slackware, evne though I knew I would stick with slack until I figured out any problems I had. So I don't know debian, but how hard can it be to apt-get everything? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
