netgear http://www.netgear.com/

you can get a linksys cable/dsl router cheap, same with netgear.

I've been using an SMC 7004ABR router for my home network for almost a year, and would certainly recommend it to anyone. Once in a while, I have to reboot it as it seems to hang occaisionally like that other operating $y$tem does ;) but usually, it works like a champ.
My brother-in-law swears by his Linksys wireless router, even though he had to replace his first one after a few months (the company warranteed it, so it didn't cost him anything).
Either one would probably be just fine.
And yes, you are correct that with the router, you don't need drivers for your PCs. None of my Linux machines use drivers to connect to my DSL modem through the router.

I've got a Linksys EtherFast 4-port router, and setting it up to work with linux was absolutely painless. I've had more trouble getting MS machines to use it than with my linux box.
