Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : XF86Config and 4090XDVD Toshiba
I have a Toshiba 4090XDVD laptop with windows and Mandrake 7.1 just now
installed.
I found this page in internet http://gandalf.sssup.it/~lamastra/satellite.htm
They have the proper XF86Config ready to go but my problem is:
1) If I install XF86Config, should it be at Mandrake in /etc/X11???
2) As I'm downloading the file in Windows in what extension should it be
saved?
3) Should it UNDERWRITTE my XF86Config??? or I could just added it to my
actual XF86Config??
Any help would be appreciated

1. No idea where the file goes in Mandrake. You should be able to search your filesystem to find it.
2. Doesn't matter what you call it. Filename or extension. Just copy it over to your Linux partition (while in Linux of course) and put in the proper directory. Backup the original first and rename the new file XF86Config. Check the permissions on the original and ensure the new file has the same.
3. If it is a complete XF86Config you are downloading, then replace the original. And as I already said, backup/rename the original to XF86Config.orig or whatever. mv XF86Config XF86Config.orig.
Answer all your questions? Hope it helps...
Thank you very much for your feedback. I almost forgot about that permissions stuff. Now they're ok.
Ok, but now what? If I tried to run xf86config it's just keep saying " Can't locate my server" in that video card question part.
Isn't there another way to run XF86Config???

You need to find out what Xserver your video chip uses and install it. SVGA, VGA16 and other specific to major video cards.
You may want to look around www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) and see if your video chip is listed and what xserver it uses.
There is a good website for laptops that I suggest you have a look at. Cannot remember the name offhand, but it has been posted around here numerous times and xfree86.org may have a link to it.
Check Mandrake's website to see what X config tools come with the distro. Some are xf86setup, xconfigurator and some others.

My Toshiba laptop 500CDT uses the Chips and Technologies video chip ct65550 and the SVGA Xserver works fine for it.
Ok, getting closer now. I tried the accel server but now when I startx there's a little window and I can't change the monitor resolution.
It says if I hit Ctrl + alt + '+' it would allow me but my keyboard is US INTERNATIONAL and '+' is in an upper position.
SIGH.....

I think it's the '+' on the keypad, not above the '='.
That + in the Keypad would work if I were using a Desktop http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
Never mind. Even the Ctrl + alt + Fn + ';' doesn't work either.
THE BEST THING IS I COULD ENTER THAT LITTLE XWINDOW, FIGURE IT OUT AND NOW MY X IS PERFECTLY UP AND RUNNING. Thank you all.
PS: Now if I only could get my lucent mars winmoden working.... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif)))))
