This is more of an informative thread than a cry for help. I was just looking at the Mandrake Linux 9.0 Beta site (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/90beta.php3) and its going to kick butt! :D Take a look at that page. I love the new KDE 3.0. If you want to download it, here is the link (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3#90beta). From what I've read on the site, it will be awhile till we get to go out and buy it.

8.2's great isn't it? 9.0 will be excellent.
Though I hope the part where all of my KDE menu items disappear has been deleted from Mandrake by October...

Beta 1 was really buggy. Hoping beta 2 will be better. One thing I found interesting, if you download the iso's, they are actually now 700 MB iso's, no more using those 74 minute cd's, 80 minute cd's are now REQUIRED for mandrake.

Updating won't be an option. I think they are using a different version of gcc. Generally, you can't update between versions that differ by an integer. 7.x to 8.x no go. 8.0 to 8.2 OK.

whatever happened to Mandrake 8.4, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7, and 8.9?
or is that not how they number things these days?
they should label it like wine: `Linux-Mandrake build 20078069' :)

Yes, they label it like that still. 8.1 and 8.2 were updates/patches to 8.0. However, 9.0 is MAJOR changes...KDE 2.2.2-->KDE3, Gnome 1.4-->Gnome2, the new GCC(sorry, not very good with keeping up with version numbers on that), etc. Also, 9.0 is going to have AMD Opteron support from what I read. Therefore, they feel justified in skipping all the revision numbers and going straight to a new major version number. They're not the only ones that do it though. RH went from 6.2-->7.0, SUSE from 7.3-->8.0, Debian from 2.2r7-->3.0r0, etc.

I asked some moderators if they would add that option on there, because it won't let me. :D

It's not necessarily the point release. It's what they put into that release that makes the diff. Mandrake 7.0 can't be upgraded to 7.1 or 7.2 (not that you'd want to anyhow) But I think 7.2 will upgrade to 8.0

finally installed and been using 9.0beta2(2 cd only). Pretty nice, they fixed most of what was broken in beta1, and they seem to have optimized it further for i686 processors...seems faster than 8.2 or beta1 on the same system, ecspecially during install.
Overall, while it can't compete with my libranet/debian sid installation for my heart, it will be a close #2 so far...further usage coming though.

Although I'm using it right now, I really hate Mandrake. I'm downloading Slackware right now though. :D

It makes things TOO easy, if you know what I mean. I don't feel like I really have control of whats going on, like in Windows (but its still better than Windows). I imagine this will help the technically illiterate migrate to Linux eventually, but its not for me.
I have also had various problems that frustrated me, things that were fine on Red Hat.

I agree with you totally. I started out on FreeBSD, then I decided that I wanted something easier to configure. So I bought Mandrake Linux.:D
