I searched through the last month of posts to make sure this question had not already been asked. This is the first time I have used the linuxnewbie.org forum. I am also going to post this question in the linux.redhat.install and linux.dev.newbie newsgroups.
I purchased the Redhat 5.2 box set in late 1998, eary 1999. After about a month's use and the realization that I was spending too much time fixing things, I gave up and went back to Windoze. I still have that box set, and want to give the Linux world a try once again, this time on a Dell Inspiron 7000.
My question: Is it worth attempting the install of 5.2 onto the laptop, or should I just attempt an install of a 7.1 or a different distro entirely?
TIA,
kmd
P.S - I saw plenty of mentions of trolls, and the occasional "bump." I haven't seen these terms in the other usenet groups I follow. I'm not trying to be too annoying, but would anyone care to explain those terms, for me, or any other newbie, as this the site is aimed for newbies. Thank you. :)

Most of the newer distros install fine on laptops. I really don't know which would be best.
A little research at the websites of those you are considering would be a good place to start.
Mandrake 8, Redhat 7.1, Slackware 8 and my favorite, OpenLinux Workstation 3.1 should do fine on a laptop.

On linux forums, I believe trolls are windows lovers who pretend to be linux users and try to provoke arguments about which os is better.
Bump is used to move your question to the head of the queue. This usually happens when a person doesn't get a response to their question. After a day or two, they use ' bump ' to put the question back in front of everybody in the hope that someone will provide an answer.

I recnetly got myself a dell inspiron. I tried to install the SUSE version 7.2 with no success when trying to get the video card setup. I got the Redhat 7.1 and had no problems with anything. It found the network card, soundcard, and the video card running at Dell Native settings. Well good luck with the install whichever one you choose.

REMEBER Hell I used that OS to the ground. I got my first quake server running with that OS. Quite a great setup. I was able to get all my hardware working with that os too. I had several CDs but I had ruined it by lending it out constantly. We came along way in only 1.9 steps.

Do you know if 5.2 would install fine on a Inspiron 7000, if so, if upgrading the kernel to 7.1 would be safe or even possible?

Yup, I have a copy of it right here, along with FreeBSD 3.0....

I ran RH 5.2 for awhile back during the time you bought yours.
I think it has kernel 2.0.36 and XFree 3.3.2. It also uses libc5 (not glibc/libc6) So if you look for rpm's outside of whats on the CD they'll have to be libc5.
So the thing you have to find out is if the hardware on your laptop will be supported out-of-the-box by this kernel and version of XFree or will you have to do some upgrading right from the start. Depending on the amount of time you have or want to invest in getting everything working just the way you want, you may want to go ahead with a newer distro.

Since Redhat 5.2 is a couple of years old and your Dell is relatively new ???, you will have quite a bit of upgrading to do to get all hardware to work.
I would suggest you get a version that is newer than the laptop if possible.

Get a copy of Mandrake or Red Hat over at Cheapbytes.com
I have 5.2, 6.1, and just installed 7.1. And I can tell you, the software and drivers that come with 5.1 isn't going to support half your hardware. You really need at least a distro that came out 6 months after you bought your laptop to guarantee support.
I'm sure someone could make it work, but I don't think I'd bother as cheap as Linux is.
