I just had to reinstall redhat linux 7.3, when I was finishing the installation I acidently went past the final screen too fast. I want my default desktop to be KDE and not GNOME. How do I change the default desktop?

Open an xterm and type switchdesk kde.

You can also change it with the tool box thingie under window managers.

edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop and put your favourite desktop over there

Ahh.. thank you. I registered just so that I could reply and give thanks. Was messing with my new box and accidentally switrched to TWM. What a pain in the arse. Thankfully I just searched and found this post. Again, thank you. :)

Hey, I'm having the same problem. Will this work in Slackware 8.1 as well? I accidenatlli chose Enlightment as my default desktop.

It'll only work if you installed switchdesk.

You could always open your favorite text editor (mine is vim) and edit the ~/.xinitrc file or the ~/.sessions file.

I tried switchdesk, and that works fine for setting the default desktop for a single user (ie. the user that executes the program). But, how do you change the system default desktop?

I have two computers, both use X, both boot at runlevel 5 for graphical login. But, one uses the GNOME login while the other uses the KDE login. I prefer the KDE login, because the KDE logout allows you the option to reboot or shutdown on the initial user logout, rather than having to return to the login window to halt the system. Not to mention the cool dragon (j/k).

What file controls the default login/logout? Switchdesk isn't the key to this - or for some reason it is not working. Anyone know what file defines the login environment?

THanks!!

I'm pretty sure that would be in the Redhat 7.3 documentation (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/).

A search of this bbs or a read through of some desktop postings would probably find the answer you need.
