I got my GPS working on my Compaq laptop.
Had to chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0 to make the USB port accessible by users. I found that on << this >> (http://www.linuxfocus.org/English/November2001/article223.shtml) site after a couple days searching. That way, I could use my USB/serial converter to hook my Garmin III to the computer.
I then download GPS Drive from << here >> (http://gpsdrive.kraftvoll.at/). It downloads maps from Expedia or MapBlaster. You can set up a route cross-country... Large-scale maps for the highway stretches, and small-scale for in-town driving. It can automagically switch to the best map you have for your position.
I went out sailing on Lake Superior with some friends yesterday. Here's the track... Sorry, I don't have the original PNG. This JPEG is kind of a pig.
