Well I would like to replace RedHat 7 with freeBSD however, I know that the new Linux kernel will have almost full USB support, I have not heard anyhting about freeBDS in regards to updated kernel or even USB. Does the release of a new Linux Kernel affect freeBSD or are these two different OS that share only a UNIX liking? Is BSD a good OS to run as a Desktop software vs a server?

If you install FreeBSD with linux binary compatibility, the two are supposed to be very similiar. Most suource code will compile on it.

Search the archives. This topic has been discussed many times before.

They have a completely different kernel, but they can run a lot of the same software -- general 'UNIX' software should run on both. Plus FreeBSD has linux ABI emulation.

In short, yes. For a better answer, seach the archives.

FreeBSD and Linux are totaly seperate. FreeBSD is based on BSD, and Linux was just hacked together by Linus. Some say FreeBSd is closer to a real Unix OS, but to me Unix is Unix is Unix, they all are supposed to behave the same way.

I run FreeBSD as a desktop (I just got tierd of Linux). For a users perspective, it isn't much different then Linux. Both are Unix clones, with POSIX capabilities. I do like the package management, and the documentation is much better.

I have 4.2-release, and when recompiling the kernel, I noticed it does have USD support. I left it on, and it takes a few seconds to check for devices while booting. I don't currently have any USB devices to test with it, so I'm not sure how well it is supported.

FreeBSD had stable USB support before Linux did.
