I am trying to install Linux-Mandrake 7.2 but it will not go farther than the partition of the hard drive.
It comes up with Deleteing the whole Windows partition, run using the partition of the extra space from Windows, or Expert Mode.
I tried the extra space from windows partition, and it will tell me to run scandisk and defrag as an option.
I did the scandisk and Defrag but it will not do anything it stalls if you try to go on.

I had this problem too. I used expert mode to set up a partition, it looked difficult at first, but it wasn't to bad. I was totally new at linux too. Hope this helped.

Try running a complete scandisk from windows, not just the one that pops up when you do an incomplete scan.....

I always recommend that you first backup your data, backup your data, then use a 3rd party partitioning tool such as Partition Magic to create a Linux primary partition (usually ext2) and swap partition. Then when you install Mandrake just choose the "use existing partitions" option.

I had no problem, I just overwrote my entire Win95 partition (on my old machine). Drake 7.2 works just fine. Suggestion get a hold of someone from your local Linux Users Group and see if they can talk you through it the first time.

CMonster has the best advice for the easiest install. Buy and install PM5 or 6 and use it to shrink your existing Win partitions and then create Ex2 partitions and Swap in the newly available space. Create a Boot partition at the start of your first hard drive and all the rest at the end of your Win ones. When you do the install select Custom and the installer will find the partitiond you have created. You can then click on them and give them useful names like root and home etc. E mail me if req and I will send a screenshot of my PM5 set up and partitions.
All the best

What about installing a second hard drive that is blank?

that is what a friend of mine has been doing with linux and windows.
