I was wondering.... what are the compatability issues with AMD Durons and linux? Are they supported? Mandrake is optimized for the i586... and the "i" stands fot intel... does that mean Mandrake won't work with AMD? Reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about getting one soon. Sorry, I'm a bit hardware-ignorant.... Thanks for all help though.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.
im waiting to see how the chipsets on the durons are going to work with some of my audio applications before i start saving but it is looking VERY promising, durons keep up with the athlons pretty good and spank intel, sorry all j00 pentium groupies out there

I have an AMD 900Mhz Athlon/Thunderbird rated as a 686 and it works fine. Why don't you do what I did and check out the AMD site where it gives an enormous amount of information about their processors.
As far as I have seen is that AMD processors whup the dog doo out of Intel Processors...my 900 AMD is rated nearly as high as an Intel 1Ghz. If I tweaked it some it would probably beat it.
Even the new PIIII's aren't equalizing things...
BTW, I am running Mandrake 7.2 and haven't seen any problems that I couldn't blame on my own newbieness.

One of the new things you can expect to see in the 2.4 line of kernels is more cpu option choices. More optimizations mainly it would appear, i686 will no longer be the top of the heap.

i means Intel Compatiable 586 processor architecture. As several people mentioned the AMD Athlon Classic/thunderbird and Duron are of the 686 architecture family.

I'm using a Duron 650 to run Mandrake 7.2 and it gets reported in the text mode penguin screen as something like AMD AMD Duron Processor Processor with around 1300 Bogomips. Something's getting confused and doubling up some of the words. Apart from that it works fine.
IMHO the Duron is a great value processor, but you will need a new motherboard and they are not the cheapest.

I just installed an AMD Druan 800 and it runs GREAT! Got it for $100.........God, I love AMD! I purchased an ABIT board designed for socket A chips. It ran about $140.
