recompile kernel

I really need some help on this, I'm really really new to linux and I have maintain a linux server at school. The computer ppl at school are always too busy to help me and I can't find a detailed step-by-step of how to recompile a kernel anywhere! I'm using Caldera eDesktop 2.4 Can anyone here help me? I will be very grateful! thank you all so much!

Third:
Get a copy of Running Linux from the O'Reilly press. They have an excellent chapter on compiling kernels.
Fourth:
Go on over to the Technical Support forum for a fairly detailed account of how to install 2.4.
